4 March 2015 HERE we are, well into the second decade of the twenty-first century, and the vexed topic of gender in corporate life is commanding more serious attention than ever before. Much of this focuses on why, so many years on from equality legislation, women have still not achieved parity with men at the top of the business world.

This spotlight on the pinnacle of big businesses is obscuring signs of a subtle shift away from the Western male domination that characterised the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is showing up in many different ways: the feminization of leadership styles, the importance of female purchasing power, the disruptive impact of the internet on business models, the shift of economic power from West to East, and the change in men’s roles and attitudes towards work and family life. Companies ignore these trends at their peril.

16 December 2014: At a recent event on “Nurturing Young Female Talent”, hosted by the 30% Club in London, a series of speakers set out the challenges facing the new generation of women, both in society and at work, and talked about some interesting initiatives to address these. My December IWE column, below, was inspired by the event.

Vanessa Vallely had a tough childhood growing up in the shadow of London’s financial district and vowed to make her fortune there one day. She succeeded, but discovered along the way that she was “an Alpha female desperate to find her inner woman”. This summer column is about how women’s sports often take second place and lack both the funding and media attention given to male-dominated sports. It was inspired by a report by Women on Boards Australia on how to increase female representation on sports’ governing bodies – and why it matters.

I recently wrote a cover piece for Financial Times Executive Appointments about the mismatch between rising demand for flexible hours/location and job vacancies advertised as flexible. Recruiters and managers are failing to keep up!

Welcome to my updated and refreshed website. The old one did very well in withstanding  the test of time, but this new one is much more flexible, which is a good thing.

As you’ll see, it has the same look about it, but with new features and lots of links, as well as this blog. Here I’ll be sharing my articles and columns, and commenting on ideas, interesting events I’ve attended and things I’ve read. I hope you enjoy it.
