12 April 2015 My latest IWE column looks at a new book by entrepreneur and coach Bonnie Marcus that reframes workplace politics and self-promotion as essential leadership skills. Read it here: Can self-promotion ever be nice?

A Gender Power Shift in the Making
4 March 2015 HERE we are, well into the second decade of the twenty-first century, and the vexed topic of gender in corporate life is commanding more serious attention than ever before. Much of this focuses on why, so many years on from equality legislation, women have still not achieved parity with men at the top of the business world.
This spotlight on the pinnacle of big businesses is obscuring signs of a subtle shift away from the Western male domination that characterised the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is showing up in many different ways: the feminization of leadership styles, the importance of female purchasing power, the disruptive impact of the internet on business models, the shift of economic power from West to East, and the change in men’s roles and attitudes towards work and family life. Companies ignore these trends at their peril.

Why career adaptability matters more than ever
15 February 2015 Why do some people manage career transitions well while others end up feeling events have conspired against them? My latest column published by IWE is based on new research by Hilary Lindsay of the ICAEW on the characteristics of career adaptability. Her findings are extremely relevant to the changing world of work.
The resilience factor in women’s leadership
11 January 2015: My latest column discusses the importance of resilience in career success. Examining a new report, Tough at the Top, by Sarah Bond and Gillian Shapiro, it looks at what individuals and organisations can do to build resilience, particularly to enable more women to reach leadership positions. Just published by IWE, you can read it here: How to be more resilient
Supporting the next generation of women
16 December 2014: At a recent event on “Nurturing Young Female Talent”, hosted by the 30% Club in London, a series of speakers set out the challenges facing the new generation of women, both in society and at work, and talked about some interesting initiatives to address these. My December IWE column, below, was inspired by the event.
Heels of Steel – book review
Vanessa Vallely had a tough childhood growing up in the shadow of London’s financial district and vowed to make her fortune there one day. She succeeded, but discovered along the way that she was “an Alpha female desperate to find her inner woman”. She found herself by building an extraordinary network and online resource for women like her. This is my review of her spirited autobiography, Heels of Steel: Visibility & recognition at work
My column was published by IWE (International Women of Excellence) in September 2014.
Women as sports role models
18 Aug 2014
This summer column is about how women’s sports often take second place and lack both the funding and media attention given to male-dominated sports. It was inspired by a report by Women on Boards Australia on how to increase female representation on sports’ governing bodies – and why it matters.
Published by IWE this month, you can read it here: Women as sports role models-Maitland-IWE article
Want flexible working? You’re not alone
I recently wrote a cover piece for Financial Times Executive Appointments about the mismatch between rising demand for flexible hours/location and job vacancies advertised as flexible. Recruiters and managers are failing to keep up!
The piece is available to read online here: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/b8854df2-f16e-11e3-9161-00144feabdc0.html?siteedition=uk or here: FT-EA-Maitland-June 19 2014
Welcome to my new site
Welcome to my updated and refreshed website. The old one did very well in withstanding the test of time, but this new one is much more flexible, which is a good thing.
As you’ll see, it has the same look about it, but with new features and lots of links, as well as this blog. Here I’ll be sharing my articles and columns, and commenting on ideas, interesting events I’ve attended and things I’ve read. I hope you enjoy it.
Work? You can go your own way
There are as many ways to get work done as there are workers. Read my TCB Review column from spring 2014 about why it’s time companies did some joined-up thinking about the future of work and how to manage the new workforce.
